Young Heroes Shine Bright at the 2026 SEND Awards

The 2026 SEND Awards have witnessed a remarkable celebration of perseverance and achievement as young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) take center stage in recognizing inspiring individuals and organizations. This year, a record-breaking 407 nominations were submitted, showcasing the triumphs of those who continue to excel despite the challenges posed by their circumstances.

A Testament to Resilience and Community Spirit

Members of the Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG) came together on April 23 at Blundell Park to carefully review these nominations and select the winners. Each nomination tells a powerful story of resilience, enthusiasm, and commitment, embodying the spirit of a community that refuses to be defined by its challenges. From uplifting tales of children demonstrating remarkable determination to heartwarming accounts of families supporting each other through tough times, the nominations paint a vivid picture of strength and compassion.

Empowering Voices: The Role of YPAG

YPAG's role in this process is instrumental. By involving young people with additional needs, the awards reflect genuine insights from those who understand the intricacies of the SEND landscape. Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, emphasized the importance of this involvement, stating, “Having young people involved in choosing the winners ensures the SEND Awards truly reflect what matters to those with lived experience.” This commitment to authenticity and fairness amplifies the significance of the awards.

Looking Ahead: Celebrating Successes

The winners of the SEND Awards will soon be contacted and invited to a celebratory event at Grimsby Town Hall on June 18, where the community will come together to honor these exceptional individuals and organizations. This gathering promises to be a momentous occasion, one that not only highlights achievements but also fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity within the SEND community.

As we celebrate these young heroes, it is vital to recognize and support the ongoing journey of individuals facing additional challenges. These stories remind us that with resilience, support, and understanding, remarkable achievements are possible.
