Young Heroes Shine at the 2026 SEND Awards, Celebrating Resilience and Community
The 2026 SEND Awards have highlighted the incredible achievements of young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who are making a difference in their communities. The event, organized by the Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG), showcases inspiring stories of those who continue to thrive against the odds.
A Platform for Empowerment
On April 23, members of YPAG gathered at Blundell Park to review an impressive 407 nominations from across the community. These nominations not only recognize individual accomplishments but also reflect the collective strength and determination of young people within the SEND community. Each story shared embodies resilience, enthusiasm, and a commitment to overcoming challenges.
Voices of Experience
A noteworthy aspect of the awards is the involvement of young people in the selection process, ensuring that the winners genuinely represent the values and experiences of their peers. Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children's Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, emphasized the importance of this approach: "Having young people involved in choosing the winners ensures the SEND Awards truly reflect what matters to those with lived experience. Their insight brings authenticity, fairness, and heart to the process."
Creating an Inclusive Community
Nominees included educators and activity providers who have gone above and beyond to create inclusive environments. One parent noted that the commitment of the educational setting extends beyond the classroom, offering vital support to families during challenging times. Another nomination praised an activity provider for fostering a safe and welcoming space, stating, "They have created a safe, welcoming community where families no longer feel alone."
Looking Ahead
As the community prepares for the celebration scheduled for June 18 at Grimsby Town Hall, the recognition these young individuals receive serves to uplift and inspire. The stories of their accomplishments not only celebrate personal victories but also highlight the importance of community support and inclusiveness in the SEND sector.
