You Won't Believe How Young People are Transforming the SEND Community!

In a heartwarming display of resilience and determination, young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have taken center stage in the 2026 SEND Awards. This year, the Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG) met on April 23 at Blundell Park to review an impressive 407 nominations, showcasing extraordinary stories of young individuals who are not only striving against their challenges but excelling.

Empowering Stories of Resilience

The nominations tell powerful tales of young people who demonstrate a remarkable commitment to overcoming obstacles. One nomination poignantly noted, “They prove every day that determination can overcome even the greatest challenges.” Such uplifting anecdotes reflect the spirit of the local SEND community, emphasizing the strength and compassion that these young individuals possess.

Community Support and Inclusion

The SEND Awards emphasize the importance of community support, as illustrated by one parent who expressed gratitude for their child's educational setting. They conveyed, “Their commitment doesn’t stop at the school gate — they support families through the hardest moments too.” This sentiment underscores the vital role that inclusive practices play in the lives of families with SEND children.

A Fair and Authentic Selection Process

YPAG members utilized their own lived experiences to critically evaluate each nomination, ensuring that the winners reflect genuine inclusion and meaningful impact. Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children's Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, expressed the value of involving young people in this decision-making process, stating, “Having young people involved in choosing the winners ensures the SEND Awards truly reflect what matters to those with lived experience.”

Looking Ahead to the Celebration

As the anticipation builds, winners of the SEND Awards will soon be contacted and invited to a celebration at Grimsby Town Hall on June 18 at 5:30 PM. This event promises to honor the extraordinary achievements of young individuals who illuminate the path of perseverance and positivity.
