Wick's Transformative Housing Investment: A Bright Future Ahead

The town of Wick is about to undergo a significant transformation thanks to a £1 million investment from SSEN Transmission aimed at upgrading the local housing stock. This initiative will breathe new life into 18 properties in Wick, converting them into modern, energy-efficient homes that will support the workforce involved in much-needed infrastructure projects.

Modernizing Homes for Community Benefit

SSEN Transmission’s plan to renovate these properties includes the installation of new kitchens, bathrooms, and heating systems, ensuring a high standard of comfort, safety, and energy efficiency. This effort aligns with the company’s broader commitment to deliver 1,000 homes across the north of Scotland as part of its Pathway to 2030 clean energy strategy.

A Community-Centric Approach

Jan McEwan, the Provost of Wick, has expressed optimism about the project, noting it as a positive change for the community, especially in light of the absence of any wind farm community benefits in the area. The upgrades are set to enhance the aesthetic and living conditions on Nicolson Street and Wellington Street, ultimately creating a more pleasant environment for all residents.

Future Aspirations

Highland Council leader Raymond Bremner highlighted the importance of revitalizing long-term empty homes and establishing a "lasting legacy for our communities." He emphasized the project's role in addressing the regional housing challenges while enhancing the quality of life for those in Wick. The refurbishment will not only meet immediate housing needs but also contribute to the overall development goals of the local area.
