Why Gen Z is Redefining Holiday Travel with Fitness Goals
In a remarkable shift, a recent study reveals that a significant number of Gen Z travelers are transforming the way they approach vacations. Instead of solely seeking relaxation and indulgence, they are prioritizing fitness in their holiday planning, highlighting a growing trend that intertwines travel with well-being and active lifestyles.
Fitness at the Forefront of Travel
According to research conducted on 2,000 adults aged 18 to 29, one-third of Gen Z members now make travel decisions based on their fitness goals. The findings show that 30% of these young adults either 'always' or 'often' plan their getaways around exercise, a significant rise from previous years. Nearly half of those surveyed (47%) agree that fitness considerations are more influential in their travel plans today than they were five years ago.
Active Holidays: More Than Just Sightseeing
This trend is evidenced by the types of activities that Gen Z is opting for while traveling. Popular choices include swimming (46%), walking long distances (38%), and gym workouts (25%). As Jenni Tardiff, a master trainer at The Gym Group, highlights, these young travelers are increasingly viewing holidays as opportunities to stay active, set fitness goals, and discover new activities.
The Pursuit of Well-being
The motivations behind this fitness-focused approach to travel are deeply rooted in mental well-being. More than a third (33%) of Gen Z travelers indicate that working out while on holiday boosts their mental health, while 21% feel refreshed and energized by maintaining their exercise routines. The desire to integrate fitness into travel experiences is a telling sign of their prioritization of health and balance even while indulging in leisure activities.
Planning for Fitness
The data also reveals that 44% of Gen Z travelers believe that running a 10k in a new location is the best way to explore it. This has prompted many to adjust their packing, with 45% prioritizing suitcase space for running shoes and workout gear. When booking accommodations, a substantial 34% filter options to ensure access to a gym, and over half (57%) are willing to pay a premium for nearby exercise facilities.
Combining Adventure with Fitness
Fitness-focused travelers are also keen on participating in events during their trips, with 12% engaging in competitions like HYROX races, 16% participating in various races, and 20% attending fitness retreats. On average, these travelers spend around £335 annually on exercise holidays, showcasing their commitment to integrating fitness into their travel experiences without sacrificing the opportunity to explore local culture and attractions.
As Tardiff points out, this trend is not about extreme training or missing out on fun. Instead, for many young people, it is about feeling good, maintaining their routines, and using movement to amplify their holiday experiences. This new wave of fitness-led travel is an inspiring indication of how the priorities of younger generations are evolving, intertwining health and adventure in exciting new ways.
