Vernon’s Housing Development: A Promising Start Towards Meeting Housing Needs
The City of Vernon is making significant strides in its mandated housing development, as reflected in a recent report presented to the council. With a target of nearly 1,850 new housing units set for the next five years by the provincial government, the city is currently exceeding its pace in achieving these vital housing goals.
Impressive Initial Progress
During the six-month reporting period from September 2025 to February 2026, Vernon reported the issuance of occupancy for 270 new housing units, despite the demolition of 12 units, resulting in a net gain of 258 new housing units. This impressive figure means the city has achieved 93 percent of its first-year housing target within just six months. Such progress has been largely attributed to the completion of three multi-family development projects, which alone accounted for over half of the newly registered units.
Development Initiatives Support Growth
In addition to constructing new units, the city has taken proactive steps to enhance its housing landscape. Notable actions include updates to the Official Community Plan aimed at promoting residential density and fostering collaboration with homebuilders. Additionally, efforts to streamline building approvals are underway through the introduction of an interactive web map and the development of a lot-identification tool.
Community Engagement and Future Outlook
Recognizing the importance of community involvement, Vernon is also engaging residents, realtors, and home builders to capitalize on collective efforts towards housing solutions. While there are challenges ahead due to potential changes in funding and approval processes, the city remains optimistic about maintaining its current pace. Councillor Brian Guy expressed confidence in the mixed variety of housing sizes, tenures, and affordability, highlighting that the community is indeed on a positive trajectory towards fulfilling its housing obligations.
