The 15th Gran Canaria Spring South Craft Fair is currently underway, celebrating the fusion of tradition and creativity at the picturesque rooftop venue of the Maspalomas Lighthouse Parking Garage. With 52 artisans from 15 municipalities showcasing their unique crafts and the personal narratives behind their work, this event is a vibrant hub of talent and inspiration.

Among the standout participants is Clara Isabel González, founder of La Osa Artesana. Her creative journey began with the practical need for a baby backpack that she couldn’t find on the market. "Since I couldn't find a practical backpack to carry my baby, I made it myself… and from that seed my brand was born," she shares. Utilizing reclaimed textiles, Clara's handcrafted backpacks are exclusively one-of-a-kind, showcasing her commitment to sustainability and individual craftsmanship. Her first experience at the fair has been met with enthusiasm from the public, emphasizing the appreciation for artisanal techniques.
Transforming Waste into Wonders
Mónica Calabria, the creative force behind Las Tijeras de Mónica, also captures attention with her transformation of discarded garments into enchanting dolls and plush toys. "I buy pajamas, sweatshirts, or blankets in good condition and turn them into toys," she explains. Her delightful creations, which include elephants and dolphins, have garnered a loyal followership that seeks her unique products at every fair since 2019.
A Global Audience Embracing Local Crafts
The fair has attracted an international audience this year, further enriching the experience. Tourists like Janas and Anika from Germany expressed their delight in discovering local crafts, emphasizing the importance of supporting small businesses. “It's great, plus many of them recycle materials, I find it very interesting,” Janas noted, highlighting the fair's blend of cultural exchange and sustainability.
Showcasing Unique Artistic Techniques
Visitors to the fair can also explore innovative artistic techniques, such as the batik dyeing method employed by Esther Silvia Rodríguez of Soplos de Arte. Her meticulously crafted textile fans require significant dedication, exemplifying the patience and skill inherent in local handcrafted traditions. Additionally, artisans like Miguel Santana demonstrate the enduring value of traditional crafts through palm weaving, producing brooms and baskets that are particularly popular among foreign tourists.
