Unlocking the Sweet History: Alexandria Receives Chocolate History Grant!

The Heritage Chocolate Society has awarded Historic Alexandria the esteemed Forrest E. Mars Jr. Chocolate History Grant, a recognition that not only underscores the significance of chocolate in American culture but also promises to enliven the local community's understanding of its rich historical connections. This grant, totaling $52,800, will play a pivotal role in enhancing public appreciation for chocolate's historical narrative during the upcoming Sails on the Potomac Festival in June 2026.

A Celebration of Chocolate in Alexandria

As part of the festival, Historic Alexandria is set to host a captivating historic chocolate demonstration that will take place during the festival, anchoring the "250th History Village." This event will showcase the vibrant history of chocolate, connecting the modern-day community with its 18th-century roots when chocolate was a popular drink among the elite and played a crucial role in social gatherings.

Chocolate’s Role in Historical Understanding

According to Liz Williams, Deputy Director of the Office of Historic Alexandria, the grant will enable a deeper exploration of Alexandria's global trade networks and the complex roles of race, gender, and class that surrounded chocolate in the 18th century. Chocolate is currently viewed not just as a confection but as a window into the past, offering insights into life in a port city where trade flourished.

A Grand Tradition Continues

Historically, chocolate has been an integral component of community life, serving both as sustenance and a focal point for social interaction. As historian Dave Borghesani elaborates, chocolate has a history of over 3,500 years, interweaving itself through various cultures and traditions. From colonial taverns to contemporary celebrations, its narrative continues to evolve, enriching our understanding of societal values and connections.

Looking Ahead

The Heritage Chocolate Society, since its inception in 2003, has granted nearly $700,000 to support numerous projects across North America. The upcoming activities in Alexandria will not only celebrate chocolate but will also symbolize the importance of preserving and sharing community stories. For those eager to join this historical journey, further information on this initiative can be found on the Heritage Chocolate Society's website and social media platforms.
