Unity and Faith Shine in Henley's Open-Air Good Friday Service

This year's Good Friday service in Henley's Market Place brought together congregations from five local churches to celebrate unity and community spirit. Led by Rev Sam Brewster from Trinity Church, the event emphasized the importance of faith and togetherness in today's world.

A Humble Gathering

On a sunny afternoon, dozens of worshippers from Holy Trinity, St Mary’s, Sacred Heart, Henley Baptist, and Christ Church convened for this annual joint service. Rev Brewster expressed that the public setting was a strategic choice, reflecting the idea that Jesus' message is for everyone. "When I’m lifted up, I’ll draw all kinds of people to myself," Rev Brewster noted, highlighting the inclusive nature of the gathering.

Reflecting on Faith and Diversity

Pastor Jeremy Bray from Henley Baptist Church echoed this sentiment, noting the remarkable diversity among attendees. As he acknowledged a cultural shift where more young people are finding faith, he pointed to public figures like rapper Stormzy, who openly declare their love for God, as inspiring examples for the youth.

A Lifeline in the Community

The service was not just a religious gathering but also a testament to the supportive network formed within the church community. David Rice-Evans shared how Trinity Church played a vital role in helping him during a personal loss, showcasing the strong bond cultivated within church congregations.

Bringing People Together

Sarah Aston, one of the attendees, expressed her appreciation for the unity and connection felt during the event. “It’s great to celebrate with other Christians from all different churches," she remarked. The open-air setting allowed strangers to meet, share stories, and even exchange “cold cross buns” in the sunshine after the service.

The joint Good Friday service is one of two major gatherings held each year by Henley’s churches, with a similar event taking place at Christmas. Rev Brewster emphasized the importance of these collaborative efforts, illustrating the close relationships among church leaders and their unified mission in the community.
