This year’s grape harvest in the UK is garnering optimism from producers, thanks to resilient vineyard management that has enabled the growth of healthy, high-quality fruit. Chapel Down Winery, located in Tenterden, Kent, is among the vineyards benefiting from the recent stable summer conditions that followed a challenging season marked by adverse weather events.

WineGB, the trade body representing UK wine producers, has reported remarkable recovery and positive fruit development across vineyards in England and Wales. Despite experiencing frost and hailstorms earlier in the season, growers have employed effective vineyard management techniques, ensuring that the quality of the produce remains high. Nicola Bates, the chief executive of WineGB, highlights the exceptional skills demonstrated by producers in overcoming these challenges, stating, "Our producers have shown exceptional skill this season, one in which we saw frost, hailstorms, and a heatwave within weeks of each other."

Looking ahead, Bates remains optimistic, acknowledging that while its too early to predict the overall impact on this year's harvest, the strength of the vineyards inspires confidence. "The vineyards look strong and we're optimistic," she remarked, emphasizing the importance of adaptability in the face of increasingly variable weather conditions.

WineGB is actively urging retailers, wholesalers, and hospitality operators to continue supporting English and Welsh wines, as the category shows significant growth potential. An upcoming event, the 2026 WineGB Trade & Media Tasting, scheduled for September 7 at Old Billingsgate in London, aims to showcase the diversity and quality of this sector to buyers and industry professionals.
