Transforming Tragedy into Triumph: Churchtown Primary's Inspiring Award Win

In a remarkable display of resilience and community spirit, Churchtown Primary School from Southport has been honored with the prestigious Inspiring Play Award at the 2026 Youth Sport Trust Awards. This recognition comes in the wake of the tragic loss of two of its pupils, Alice da Silva Aguiar and Bebe King, in a horrifying incident nearly two years ago.

A Playground of Hope

Since the devastating events, the school has transformed its grief into positive action. Through an extraordinary effort led by students, Churchtown Primary successfully raised £380,000, which has been dedicated to constructing a new playground in memory of Alice and Bebe. This outdoor space is designed to enhance unstructured, child-led play, fostering joy and creativity among students.

A Community United

Headteacher Jinnie Payne expressed the significance of this achievement, stating, “This is for all for the community – the Southport community – but also nationally.” The sense of pride and ownership among students has been a focal point, as they played an essential role in fundraising efforts, making the playground not just a facility but a symbol of their collective strength.

The Power of Sport and Play

The Youth Sport Trust Annual Conference Awards celebrated the innovative uses of sport to improve children’s health and well-being. Hosted by TV personality Radzi Chinyanganya, the event brought together prominent figures from the sporting world to acknowledge the positive impacts that sport can have in educational settings. Sarah Massey, director of sport at the British Olympic Association, highlighted the profound stories showcased at the event, emphasizing the inspirational nature of community-driven initiatives.

Churchtown Primary's award serves as a powerful reminder of how sports and play can cultivate resilience and unity, allowing a community to heal and grow even in the face of profound loss. The transformation of a playground into a beacon of hope showcases the strength of collective effort, serving as an example for schools across the nation.
