Transforming Lives: How One Young Soap Maker is Making His Dreams Come True

In an inspiring story of growth and determination, Zandré, a young man from Stellenbosch, is making waves in his community thanks to the transformative efforts of the Pebbles Project. This non-profit organization is dedicated to enriching the lives of disadvantaged farm children and their families through effective education and support.

A Journey of Empowerment

Zandré's connection with Pebbles Project began in his early childhood when he attended the Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre on the farm where he was raised. His experiences in the Pebbles Project After-School Club, particularly the art lessons, ignited a passion for creativity and community engagement that he would carry into his future. “I’ve always known I want to run my own ECD centre one day. I want to empower children and help them discover and follow their dreams,” he shares, reflecting on his aspirations.

Turning Waste Into Opportunity

In March 2024, Zandré took a significant step forward when he began working on the Soap For Hope Project, a collaboration between Pebbles Project and Dow Diversey. This initiative not only recycles discarded hotel soap into essential hygiene products but also provides invaluable job training and team experience for young individuals in underserved communities.

“I love working together in a team,” Zandré states, highlighting his enjoyment of the collaborative environment. His role has not only been about production; it has been a pathway to personal and professional development. “Cutting the soap and adding the essential oils is my favorite part of the process!” he adds with enthusiasm.

A Proud Future

The impact of this opportunity has been profound. “My family is very proud of me,” he emphasizes, expressing a sense of achievement that is palpable. He hopes to inspire others in his community to pursue their own better paths, echoing the support he received through Pebbles Project. Zandré is determined to start his journey toward opening his own ECD centre, planning to first assist at the facility on his farm.

As he continues to flourish within the Pebbles Recycled Soap Project, Zandré’s gratitude towards Pebbles Project is evident. "Pebbles opened paths for me. I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for Pebbles," he reflects, thanking the organization for the opportunities it has provided him.

Zandré's journey is a testament to the power of community support and educational empowerment. With the backing of the Pebbles Project team, there is every reason to believe that Zandré's dreams will flourish and inspire future generations.
