Transforming Lives: How a Newark Boxing Gym is Breaking Down Mental Health Barriers
In a remarkable initiative aimed at tackling the stigma surrounding men's mental health, the support group Mankind is celebrating a successful first year. Founded by Jordan Bishop, this group has become a vital resource for men in Newark, offering a safe space to open up about their feelings through the unifying power of boxing.
A Growing Brotherhood
Since its inception last summer, Mankind has expanded from a mere five members to an impressive 26, signifying the growing need for such support in the community. The sessions, held every Tuesday at the Epic Golden Gloves Boxing Gym, combine an hour of boxing with a 30-minute open discussion where members can share their struggles and successes in a judgment-free environment.
Fostering Mental Strength
Jordan Bishop introduced the concept of “mental strength” as a paradigm shift in how men perceive their mental health. He stressed the importance of vulnerability, stating, “There is no battle that you have to face alone, and change is very, very possible.” Through honest conversations and shared experiences, members have found healing and support, transforming what was once individual pain into collective strength.
Real Stories, Real Change
Neil Ford, a member who joined the group when he was in a dark place, reflects on his journey: “From where I was, to where I am now, is head and shoulders a different person.” His testimonial highlights the profound impact Mankind has had, not only on his mental health but also on his sense of belonging.
The Future of Mankind
Looking ahead, Jordan aims to expand Mankind to multiple sessions a week and hopes to serve as a model for similar initiatives throughout the UK. Eysham Pickering, owner of the gym, praised the initiative, stating, “This guy [Jordan] is changing people’s lives.” With growing support, Mankind is not just a group; it’s a movement that fosters unity, understanding, and emotional resilience among men.
To commemorate their journey and inspire others, a special anniversary session is slated for June 23 at 7pm. All are welcome, as Mankind continues to break the silence and create a community where men feel empowered to share and heal.
