Transforming Communities: Ards and North Down Launches Local Action Groups

In an exciting development for the Ards and North Down Borough, a new initiative is set to transform local communities through the launch of Local Action Groups (LAGs). Officially unveiled on June 2, 2026, these groups aim to enhance the urban landscape, foster community engagement, and promote economic growth across the region.

Collaboration at Its Core

The launch event, held at the Signal Centre in Bangor, brought together a diverse coalition of community representatives, local Chambers of Commerce, elected officials, and key stakeholders. This collaborative approach is designed to ensure that residents have a direct voice in shaping the future of their towns and city.

According to Mayor Councillor Gillian McCollum, the establishment of the LAGs marks a significant step in community-led regeneration. "I am delighted to launch the new Local Action Groups, which will bring together key stakeholders from across our communities to identify issues, collaborate on solutions, and promote positive change," she stated.

Fostering Local Leadership and Economic Growth

The Local Action Groups are set to strengthen connections within the community, encourage local leadership, and support practical initiatives aimed at boosting economic vitality. They serve as a two-way communication hub, allowing citizens to collaboratively shape strategies that enhance the quality of life in their neighborhoods.

Supported by the Department for Communities and the Department of Infrastructure, this initiative exemplifies a commitment to regeneration that is rooted in local insight and partnership.

A Platform for Business Growth

Businesses within the borough also stand to benefit significantly from this initiative. Frank Shivers, Chair of the Ards and North Down Business Forum, expressed his support by highlighting the importance of collaboration between the business community and local governance. "The Local Action Groups provide an important platform for the business community to work in partnership with the Council and other stakeholders," Shivers noted.

This effort is not isolated; it coincides with existing programs like Glow Up, Empty to Energised, and Freshen Up, which aim to enrich the vibrancy of city and town centres, showcasing the council's comprehensive strategy for enhancing local economies.

The Road Ahead

As these Local Action Groups commence their work, the focus will be on implementing practical actions that champion the assets of the borough’s towns and city. With community engagement at the heart of this initiative, the potential for positive change is immense, paving the way for a brighter future for all residents.
