Transform Your Mood: Discover the Power of Flowers at the UK's First-Ever Flower Pharmacy
The UK's first-ever “Flower Pharmacy” opened earlier this week in London, setting an innovative precedent by offering bouquets as a prescription for better emotional wellbeing. This unique pop-up event is designed to promote the everyday benefits of flowers, steering away from the conventional notion that they are mere treats for special occasions.
A Prescription for Happiness
On October 22, guests at the Flower Pharmacy participated in a one-day event where they were matched with personalized bouquets tailored to uplift, calm, or energize them based on their emotional needs. Chartered horticulturist and TV gardener David Domoney highlighted the significant impact of flowers on mood, stating, "There's something incredibly uplifting about flowers, and research has shown that they can have a positive effect on our mood and emotional wellbeing."
The Science Behind the Bloom
A study commissioned by the Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland revealed striking statistics about the emotional state of adults during the transition to shorter days, with 37% reporting struggles when the clocks change. In contrast, the Flower Pharmacy aims to combat these feelings through the therapeutic effects of flowers. Bouquets are prescribed based on color, where sunny yellows like sunflowers are for happiness, while cooler blue and green tones are for calmness.
Rethinking Floral Gifts
Interestingly, despite the emotional benefits of flowers—half of respondents claim flowers make them feel happy—38% have never considered buying flowers for themselves. Monique Kemperman, a horticulture expert for the Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland, emphasized the importance of rethinking this perspective: "Small acts of self-care can make a real difference, and flowers are a simple way to bring color, joy, and positivity into everyday life."
With more than half of participants recognizing that fresh flowers bring them more happiness than typical daily indulgences, such as coffee or sweets, the Flower Pharmacy serves as a powerful reminder of the joy and positivity that simple, beautiful things can bring into our lives.
