The Power of Positive Communication: How Teacher-Student Relationships Boost Motivation in Schools

Recent research conducted by the UCL Institute of Education highlights the significant impact that positive communication from teachers has on student motivation and learning. The UK-wide study, which involved over 1,000 young people and 600 secondary school teachers, reveals that an overwhelming 93% of students feel more motivated to come to school when teachers communicate positively.

Finding Common Ground

The findings of this study suggest that fostering better communication between teachers and students could be a vital strategy for improving attendance and overall engagement in schools. Young participants emphasized the importance of patience, fairness, and respect, with 42%, 38%, and 38% respectively citing these qualities as critical to feeling encouraged in their educational environment.

The Challenge of Harsh Words

While the majority of students benefit from positive relationships, the research also uncovers a troubling reality—25% of young people reported experiencing harsh words from teachers, which can detract from their willingness to attend school. Moreover, this issue is more pronounced among students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), with a staggering 54% expressing negative experiences with teacher interactions.

Teachers' Commitment to Relationships

Teachers themselves recognize the value of building positive relationships with their students. According to the study, 76% of teachers view relationship-building as a central aspect of their role, with 93% agreeing that these bonds are crucial for student success. Despite this understanding, teachers face challenges such as workload and behavioral issues that hinder their ability to maintain these connections consistently.

A Call for Change

The organization Words Matter advocates for necessary changes in teacher training and education policy, emphasizing the importance of preventing verbal abuse and fostering positive communication within classrooms. They stress that making these practices a priority could greatly enhance children's mental and physical health.

In light of these findings, it is clear that prioritizing positive teacher-student interactions is not just beneficial but essential for creating an environment where every student feels valued and supported. As schools continue to seek innovative ways to enhance student engagement and belonging, the role of communication in these relationships cannot be overstated.
