The Last Cassette Shop in the UK is Expanding: Here’s What You Need to Know!
In an era dominated by digital music, one shop in Manchester's Northern Quarter defies the norm. Mars Tapes, widely regarded as the last dedicated cassette shop in the UK, is set to embark on a remarkable new chapter as it expands into a larger space within the iconic Afflecks Palace. This growth reflects a surprising resurgence in the popularity of cassette tapes.
A Unique Shopping Experience
Run by Alex Tadros, Mars Tapes has been thriving since its inception in 2019. The move to a spacious new unit on the first floor of Afflecks Palace will allow the shop to offer an expanded library of cassette tapes, refurbished vintage audio equipment, and even introduce the Mars Tapes Listening Cafe. This dedicated area invites customers to enjoy a coffee while immersing themselves in the nostalgic sounds of tapes.
Celebrate with Live Music and Offers
To mark this exciting expansion, Mars Tapes is hosting a weekend celebration on March 7 and 8. The event will feature a DJ set by the renowned Dave Haslam and a live performance from the up-and-coming Glasgow band Cowboy Hunters, who will be releasing their new EP on cassette. Additionally, Horace Panter from The Specials will exhibit his unique cassette artwork during the celebration.
A Community Celebration
Alex expresses gratitude for the strong community of cassette aficionados that have supported Mars Tapes throughout its journey. “We never expected to grow in the way we have,” he reflects, excited about bringing people together for this “tape heads dream weekend.” With food, drinks, and enticing in-store deals, the expansion celebration promises to be a joyous occasion for fans of vintage music formats.
The opening weekend is not just a chance to shop but also a celebration of music culture, creativity, and the unique appeal of cassette tapes. As Mars Tapes steps into this new era, it symbolizes that even in a digital age, there is still a vibrant space for nostalgia and community.
