Teenage Hero Makes History by Saving Scout Leader's Life

In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, 15-year-old Devon Champenoy from Texas has earned one of the most prestigious awards in scouting, the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms. This commendation, given fewer than 300 times in the history of the Boy Scouts, recognizes extraordinary heroism in life-threatening situations, and Devon's recent actions certainly fit that description.

A Daring Rescue

The incident unfolded during a summer camp rafting trip through the class 3 rapids of Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains. On one particularly treacherous stretch of the river, Scout leader David Lemley fell overboard and found himself in a dire situation, trapped with his foot caught under the raft while struggling for air.

Devon observed the emergency from the raft and instinctively took action. Demonstrating a level of maturity beyond his years, he climbed across the raft to release Lemley's foot, enabling the kayakers nearby to complete the rescue. Devon's quick thinking was instrumental in preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.
