This summer, Knowsley's town centres became a hub of energy and excitement as thousands of residents and visitors participated in a series of free, family-friendly events that brought joy and community spirit during the school holidays. The programme, aptly named the Summer Fun initiative, spanned across Prescot, Huyton, and Kirkby, emphasizing the importance of local engagement and support for businesses.

The Summer Fun programme offered a wide array of entertainment options, including live performances, music, engaging characters, themed trails, and interactive activities catering to various age groups. Remarkable Increases in Visitor Numbers
Significant spikes in visitor numbers highlighted the programme's success. The Serious Nonsense Festival held in Prescot on August 22 saw an impressive 113% increase in footfall compared to recent weeks. Similarly, the Dinosaur Takeover day in Huyton Village Centre on August 15 brought in around 3,350 more visitors than typical Saturdays, marking a 31% increase. Kirkby Town Centre experienced a similar surge, with events consistently drawing larger crowds than usual.
Business Boost and Community Engagement
Local businesses reported the positive impact of increased visitor activity, as seen in the words of Grace Anderson from Doogles in Prescot, who noted, “The summer events in Prescot have been great for business.” Other business owners echoed her sentiment, emphasizing the atmospheres these events created and the importance of community in fostering local economies. Anthony Privilege, a manager at Hays Travel, remarked that the events enhanced the town's feel-good factor and strengthened community ties.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, expressed pride in the level of community engagement observed throughout the summer. He stated, “The success of this year’s events highlights the important role that town centre activities play in boosting the local economy and creating welcoming spaces for communities.” This commitment to nurturing local high streets reflects a broader strategy aimed at revitalizing community spaces and encouraging local shopping.
