Successful Public Consultation Paves the Way for Enhanced Online Safety in Jersey

A recent public consultation in Jersey has yielded positive feedback regarding proposed legislation aimed at improving the removal of illegal and harmful online content. This initiative, led by Deputy Moz Scott, Assistant Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, emphasizes the importance of community engagement in shaping effective online safety frameworks.

Community Voices Matter

The eight-week consultation garnered over 96 formal submissions, reflecting a strong community desire for statutory rights to request the removal of illegal content from online platforms. Notably, more than 80% of responses were in favor of this vital legislative change, demonstrating a clear consensus among islanders on the need for enhanced online protections.

Support for Young People's Involvement

In addition to formal submissions, contributions were made by over 100 young people through the School Council Network. This engagement underscores the commitment of the younger generation to online safety issues, indicating their willingness to voice concerns and influence policy. This proactive involvement is crucial in shaping a safer digital landscape for all users.

Looking Ahead

Deputy Scott highlighted the distressing impact of online bullying and harmful content, reinforcing the need for these legislative proposals to address such concerns effectively. As Jersey prepares to implement changes based on the consultation feedback, there is hope that these measures will not only protect individuals but also foster a more respectful online environment.
