Students Transforming Communities: A Remarkable Social Action Journey
The Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT) is highlighting an inspiring story of youth engagement and community service through its innovative "Out There" social action programme. Launched in April 2025, this initiative has enabled students to step out of their comfort zones and actively contribute to their communities, logging thousands of volunteer hours in the process.
Positive Change Through Community Engagement
According to the latest Out There Impact Report, students from OGAT dedicated their summer break to more than 100 community projects, addressing crucial themes such as sustainability, community wellbeing, and inclusivity. From revitalizing green spaces to volunteering at food banks, these young changemakers embody the very spirit of community service.
Empowering Students for the Future
Julie Slater, chief executive principal at OGAT, expressed her pride in the students’ accomplishments, stating that the programme not only strengthens communities but also cultivates vital skills in students. Many participants reported feeling more resilient and connected to a broader range of generations within their neighborhoods, showcasing the power of youth in contributing positively to society.
Recognizing Excellence in Service
The efforts of OGAT students did not go unnoticed. During an awards ceremony hosted by broadcaster Tanya Arnold at Headingley Stadium, "Team Helping Hands" from Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield received national recognition for their contributions to the Wakefield community. Their impactful work earned them a trip to Disneyland Paris, further motivating other students to engage in service.
The Future Looks Bright
The success of the 2025 programme has laid the groundwork for an even more ambitious initiative in 2026, with plans to engage 20,000 students in over 5,000 community projects. This expansion highlights OGAT's commitment to fostering a generation of young people who are not only socially aware but also eager to embrace their role as agents of change.
As we look to the future, the “Out There” initiative serves as a powerful reminder of the potential within our youth to drive positive change. Through their hard work and dedication, these students are redefining what it means to be a young person in today’s society, proving that they are indeed a force for good.
