St. Charles Health System Brightens Lives with $240,000 in Community Grants

In a commendable effort to uplift the local community, St. Charles Health System has recently awarded over $240,000 in grants to 45 organizations across Central Oregon. This initiative is designed to address critical community needs such as access to nutritious food and reducing feelings of loneliness among residents.

A Growing Response to Community Needs

The funding marks a significant response to the increasing demand for support in the region, which saw more than 90 organizations applying for the grants this year. According to Carlos Salcedo, manager of Community Partnerships at St. Charles, the need for assistance has grown markedly, demonstrating the organization's commitment to fostering a compassionate community.

Highlighting the Impact of Grant Recipients

Among the recipients is Open Door Ministries, which has received a $5,000 grant aimed at supporting individuals facing poverty or homelessness. This organization, associated with the Bend Methodist Church, provides essential services, including free clothing, hygiene items, food, and financial assistance for utilities. Remarkably, this ministry serves over 200 local residents, making a significant impact in their lives.

Voices from the Ground: The Importance of Community Support

Chuck Hemingway from Open Door Ministries emphasized the organization's commitment to helping marginalized individuals, expressing gratitude for the support that the grant will provide. "We are thrilled to receive this grant. We will be good stewards of the funding and will put it to good use," he stated.

Additionally, Charlotte Hartman, a long-serving volunteer, reflects on her nearly 40 years of service. "I've worked here almost 40 years. I do it because you just look around and see the need. It's huge. It makes me feel good and hopefully it touches someone's life in a positive way," she shared, highlighting the vital role volunteers play in addressing local challenges.

St. Charles Health System, the largest employer in Central Oregon, continues to partner with various local organizations to provide essential health services and address community needs, reaffirming its dedication to enhancing the quality of life in the area.
