In a significant advancement for LGBTQ+ rights, Spain has claimed the top position in the ILGA Europe annual Rainbow Map, overtaking Malta after a decade. This accolade reflects Spain’s commitment to enacting policies that foster equality and provide robust protections for its LGBTQ+ community.
A Historic Shift in Rankings
According to ILGA's latest report, Spain's rise from fifth place to first is attributed to a combination of legislative achievements, including the depathologization of trans identities in healthcare, the introduction of substantial legal protections, and the development of national strategies for LGBTQ+ and trans rights. This proactive approach is a testament to the effectiveness of governmental commitment to advancing equality rather than retreating from it.
Spain's Comprehensive Policies
The report highlights how Spain's rankings improved from 78% in 2025 to an impressive 88.7%. This notable increase symbolizes a broader trend toward inclusivity and protection against discrimination, setting a precedent for other nations to emulate.
