South Essex Music Legends Unite in a Historic Photographic Tribute

A momentous occasion in South Essex has been captured in a stunning group photograph featuring more than 50 prominent musicians from the region. This extraordinary image is now part of the "Scene by the Sea" exhibition at Southend's Beecroft Gallery, available for public viewing for a limited time.
A Gathering of Icons
The photograph showcases national and international artists from Southend, Canvey, and Basildon who came together at the Palace Theatre in Westcliff for this once-in-a-lifetime picture. Among those featured are well-known figures such as Paul Shuttleworth, Will Birch, and Vic Collins from The Kursaal Flyers, alongside original Dr Feelgood bassist John B Sparks and the band's manager, Chris Fenwick. The image also includes musicians linked to iconic groups like Depeche Mode and The Cure, as well as artists who have worked with legends like Eric Clapton.
A Community Effort
Mark "Snowboy" Cotgrove was the driving force behind this remarkable gathering, demonstrating the tight-knit nature of the South Essex music community. Carl Allen, a proud music fan and photographer from the Essex-based public relations agency Big Wave PR, documented the momentous event. Allen expressed his honour in capturing the spirit of the gathering and noted the challenge of getting everyone to pause long enough for the photograph.
A Lasting Legacy
The signed photograph has been donated to the Beecroft Gallery, where it will remain on display until the exhibition concludes on Sunday, October 26. Charles Sharman-Cox, curator and founder of the Thames Group of Artists, shared his excitement about the addition of this piece to the exhibition, highlighting the remarkable visitor turnout and the newfound interest this photograph will inspire.
This event not only celebrates the rich musical heritage of South Essex but also exemplifies the power of community and collaboration among artists. It serves as a reminder of the lasting impact music has on culture and the importance of preserving these moments for future generations to appreciate.
