South African Students Shine in National Investment Challenge

In a remarkable achievement, two learners from Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town have emerged victorious in the 2026 Coronation Top Investor Challenge: Schools Edition. This national competition, which aims to engage students in financial literacy and investment strategies, saw "Hume-Cowden Capital" lead the way with the highest portfolio growth among over 1,000 competing teams from more than 500 schools across South Africa.

A Bright Future in Investment

Brent Cowden and Matthew Hume, the talented duo behind the winning team, each received R30,000 in Coronation investment vouchers, while their school was awarded an additional R60,000 cash prize. This initiative has not only piqued student interest in the investment sector but also reflects a significant increase in participation—654% more schools involved and 265% more team registrations compared to the previous year, showcasing the growing enthusiasm for financial education among learners.

Empowering Young Minds

Kirshni Totaram, Global Head of Institutional Business at Coronation, emphasized the initiative's goal: to inspire young South Africans to consider careers in the investment field. She stated, “It is incredible to see young people from such diverse environments taking part, broadening their horizons and discovering a field they may not otherwise have encountered.” The Challenge allowed participants to engage with investment concepts in a practical manner, fostering a new generation of financially informed citizens.

Broader Impact on Education

The Challenge forms part of Coronation’s broader commitment to inclusivity in the investment industry. With over R100 million invested in youth development since the inception of its Exceptional Student Bursary Programme in 1993, Coronation is dedicated to providing opportunities for young individuals across South Africa. Julian Vincent, Head of Economics at Bishops, noted that such experiences not only make theoretical concepts tangible but also enhance student engagement in their studies.

As education continues to evolve, initiatives like the Coronation Top Investor Challenge are vital in equipping young minds with the skills and knowledge necessary for future success in the financial world.
