School Children Ignite Their Artistic Passions Through Turner Prize Workshops

This year, the Turner Prize is not just a prestigious award for artists but also an incredible opportunity for school children in the Tees Valley to engage with contemporary art. The Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) is at the forefront, hosting a variety of workshops inspired by the nominated artworks. With around 17,000 students participating in the Turner on Tees schools program, the impact of this initiative is profound.

Creating Cultural Confidence

Senior learning curator at MIMA, Claire Pounder, emphasizes the goal of inspiring "cultural confidence and capital" among young attendees. The workshops aim to cultivate a sense of engagement with art galleries, helping students to develop their own artistic identities. During a workshop with Brambles Primary Academy, students expressed their thoughts and feelings about the art on display. For many, like Year 4 pupil Muhammed who found the art "cool", and his classmate Holly who described it as "kind of strange", these experiences are not just educational but also enjoyable.

Investing in Future Generations

Katrina Morley, the chief executive of Tees Valley education multi-academy trust, underscores the importance of these activities in helping children flourish. By exposing them to the world of art and fostering an environment where they can explore their creativity, the program lays the groundwork for the future leaders of our communities. As she notes, "Our children and young people are the future of our communities," showcasing the dual role of art as a medium for education and inspiration.

A Bright Future Ahead

The Turner Prize exhibition at MIMA is open until March 29, 2027, and the excitement builds as the announcement of the prize winner approaches on December 10, 2026. This initiative not only celebrates artistic excellence but provides a platform for young minds to dream big and think critically—the very spirit of the Turner Prize. The vibrant interactions and the joyful responses from students serve as a reminder that art has the power to uplift and motivate, providing a sense of connection to culture and creativity in our everyday lives.
