The UK's largest bike trade associations have relaunched the "E-bike Positive" campaign aimed at promoting safe, road-legal electric bikes. This initiative not only educates the public on the differences between legal e-bikes and illegal motorbikes, but also emphasizes the importance of responsible retailing in the electric bike sector.

Understanding the E-bike Positive Initiative

Initially launched by Bosch in 2024, the E-bike Positive campaign has now been taken over by the Bicycle Association and the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT). The campaign began with a pledge from retailers to sell only legal e-bikes and educate consumers about safety regarding aftermarket lithium-ion batteries and conversion kits.

To further enhance consumer safety and awareness, a safety mark has been introduced. This mark can be displayed by retailers and on products that meet rigorous safety standards. It aims to help consumers easily identify reputable suppliers and ensure they are purchasing safe and road-legal e-bikes.

The Impact of the New Safety Marks

The campaign has introduced two prominent safety marks: the Verified Brand tag and the Approved Retailer sticker. Retailers displaying these marks demonstrate their commitment to safety and quality. The Verified Brand tag signifies that a product has passed an independent audit, ensuring it is road-legal and safe for consumers. On the other hand, the Approved Retailer sticker is for shops that only sell and service legal e-bikes, thereby promoting a safer shopping experience for consumers.

Supporting Retailers and Consumers Alike

The initiative has garnered support from numerous manufacturers and retailers, including notable names like Halfords, Decathlon, and specialized brands such as Brompton and Trek. With a recent survey indicating that 84% of people struggle to distinguish between legal e-bikes and illegal motorbikes, this campaign is more crucial than ever.

Steve Garidis, Executive Director of the Bicycle Association, emphasized that the initiative aims to protect reputable brands from being undermined by illegal and unsafe products. The safety marks provide consumers with the confidence they need when making purchases, ensuring they are investing in high-quality, legal e-bikes.

The Role of Law Enforcement

The City of London Police have also shown their support for the campaign. Sergeant Stuart Ford from the Cycle Team highlighted that measures facilitating the purchase of safe, legal e-bikes will significantly contribute to public safety.
