Revitalizing Community Spaces: Positive Developments at Sainsbury's Cockermouth
In a recent meeting between the Cockermouth District and Civic Trust and the management of Sainsbury's, hopeful plans have emerged aimed at enhancing both the conditions of the supermarket building and its forecourt area. This initiative promises not only to improve the aesthetic appeal of the site but also to foster a stronger community connection.
Positive Engagement with Local Community
The discussions, held on May 8, centered around necessary repairs to the forecourt, which have been deemed "detrimental to the image" of both Sainsbury's and the Cockermouth area. The Trust expressed their desire for Sainsbury's to engage more openly with local residents, a request that appeared to be warmly received during their dialogue.
Upcoming Improvements and Community Spaces
As part of the plan, Sainsbury's is set to commence repair work on the forecourt by the end of May, aiming to replace existing slabs with like-for-like materials. Furthermore, the Trust has proposed that the newly renovated forecourt be transformed into a more user-friendly space, potentially featuring greenery and seating to serve as a community event area.
Honoring Historical Significance
The meeting also touched upon incorporating elements that reflect the historical significance of the location, originally established as a livestock auction house in 1865. The Cockermouth District and Civic Trust has generously offered to assist in creating public information panels to commemorate this rich history, which had been obscured due to vandalism affecting a statue commemorating auctioneer Robinson Mitchell.
Additionally, Sainsbury's has agreed to consider general repair work on the building itself, which includes addressing issues such as rusty pillars and faded signage. Suggestions have even been made to explore the possibility of installing solar panels on the building’s south-facing roof to promote sustainability.
Collaborative Future Ahead
As plans develop, Cockermouth District and Civic Trust are committed to staying informed and actively involved. This collaborative approach not only aims to enhance the local supermarket's appearance but also strengthens the bond between Sainsbury's and the Cockermouth community, setting a precedent for future partnerships between businesses and local stakeholders.
