Positive Steps Towards a Just Pension for Gurkha Soldiers

A ministerial-level tripartite meeting held in London on June 9 has pointed towards a hopeful resolution for the long-standing pension demands of former British Gurkha soldiers. Participating in the discussions were three British ministers and Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shishir Khanal, who joined virtually.

Progress on Long-standing Demands

During the meeting at the Nepali Embassy, the representatives emphasized the need for equal pensions and rights for retired Gurkhas. Nepal’s Acting Ambassador to the UK, Bipin Duwadi, described the ongoing discussions as moving in a positive direction, stating that "the talks are progressing positively, and the issues are gradually being narrowed down.” Flexibility was noted among all parties, particularly regarding the welfare package for former soldiers.

Commitment from Both Sides

British Defence Secretary John Healey and Veterans and People Minister Al Carns expressed their commitment to providing support for the welfare of Gurkha veterans. Khanal highlighted the significant historical contributions of these soldiers, reinforcing the urgency for a fair and acceptable resolution.

The upcoming round of talks is scheduled for July, providing further opportunity for negotiations. This engagement reflects a renewed commitment from both the Nepali and British governments to address these crucial issues.
