Portsoy's Haal Festival Shines Bright: A Celebration of Community and Talent

Portsoy's Haal Festival Shines Bright: A Celebration of Community and Talent

Last weekend, Portsoy was alive with energy and creativity as the annual Haal festival took place, marking one of its most successful iterations yet. Organised by Folk at the Salmon Bothy, this three-day event attracted large crowds, showcasing the growing popularity of folk music and arts in the region.

Record Attendance and Hailing Performers

The festival saw venues across the town filled to capacity, with many concerts selling out. Attendees enjoyed performances from a variety of talented artists including Siobhan Miller, Kimber's Men, Thomas McCarthy, and A Wheen o' Wimmin, who travelled from different parts of the UK and Ireland to showcase their craft. Bob Philips, chairman of Folk at the Salmon Bothy, noted the overwhelmingly positive feedback from both audiences and performers, calling it the strongest gathering to date.

Community Spirit and Generous Contributions

The sense of community was palpable, with local businesses providing essential support to ensure a high-quality programme. Volunteers were also instrumental in the festival's success, dedicating their time and efforts behind the scenes to bring this celebration to life. One of the highlights was a fundraising raffle featuring a beautifully handcrafted guitar, made by local artisan Stuart B. Campbell, which raised an impressive £1330 for Haal funds.

Looking Forward to Future Festivals

Planning for the next Haal festival, set for June 4-6, 2027, is already in motion. Organisers are excited to build on this year's achievements and are exploring new ideas to make the next event even more successful. The continued enthusiasm from the community and the commitment of local sponsors promises a bright future for the Haal festival.
