Oldham's Coliseum Theatre Receives Major Funding Boost for Reopening!

In an inspiring turn of events for the performing arts in Oldham, the town's iconic Coliseum Theatre is set to undergo significant renovations thanks to a generous funding boost from Arts Council England. A total of £656,147 has been secured to facilitate the reopening of this cherished venue, which temporarily closed its doors in 2023 following a period of financial struggles.

Grassroots Campaigning Pays Off

The closure of the Coliseum sparked fierce grassroots campaigning, led by local actor Julie Hesmondhalgh and supported by the community. Their efforts have proven successful, prompting the council to re-evaluate its approach and secure a £10m renovation plan for the theatre. This funding extension is part of a larger £1.845m support package, aimed at revitalizing the institution and ensuring its future.

A Strategic Investment in Culture

Deputy leader of the council, Elaine Taylor, expressed her enthusiasm during a cabinet meeting on March 23, stating that this funding is not merely a luxury but essential for the regeneration strategy of Oldham. "Oldham’s cultural program and our work to deliver a new theatre for our borough aren’t just ‘nice-to-haves’, they’re critical to our regeneration strategy," she noted.

Strengthening Community and Creativity

This substantial investment will not only enhance the local cultural landscape but is also expected to stimulate job creation and foster a vibrant town center. The council has committed an additional £138,000 grant to the Coliseum and £127,000 for the development of a new theatre model, bringing the total investment this year to over £921,000.

The Coliseum Theatre's reopening symbolizes a broader commitment to the arts in the region, setting the stage for a revitalized cultural hub that will benefit both residents and visitors alike. As Oldham looks to the future, this project stands as a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
