This initiative, revealed on a recent Saturday, is designed to simplify the shopping experience for consumers.

The new standardization comes as a response to the increasing prevalence of varied package sizes that have complicated price comparisons across different brands. With the new regulations, consumers will find it easier to assess value for money, ensuring that they make informed purchasing decisions. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has emphasized that these measures will directly benefit buyers by making price comparison straightforward.

Consultation and Consensus

Prior to implementing these changes, the Ministry engaged in thorough consultations with industry representatives, covering nearly 90% of the edible oil sector. This collaborative approach underlines the commitment to introduce reforms that align with both consumer needs and industry capabilities.

Details of the Standardized Sizes

Under the revamped guidelines, standardized pack sizes for a variety of oils—including palm, soybean, sunflower, mustard, groundnut, sesame, rice bran, cottonseed, and corn oils—will be established. The prescribed sizes will be 200 ml/g, 500 ml/g, 1 litre/kg, up to 20 litre/kg. Additionally, packages must display both volume and equivalent weight, further enhancing transparency in the marketplace.
