New Daycare Facility to Support Plymouth Families This Fall
The Plymouth Community and Recreation Association (PCRA) is set to enhance community support for young families with the opening of a new daycare facility this fall. Originally constructed as a school in 1865, the community center is undergoing renovations to transform it into a 58-space childcare center, addressing the growing need for childcare services in the area.
A Solution for Childcare Challenges
Bert Meyer, the incoming chair of the PRCA board, highlights the significance of this initiative, stating, “To get everything up and running for the childcare centre, that's the biggest goal." The renovation aims not only to provide essential childcare services but also to serve the wider region, benefiting families throughout East River Valley.
Community Support Drives Funding
Thanks to a generous $3.1 million grant from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the project has received substantial financial backing. However, there is still a need to raise approximately $365,000 to fully realize the vision. The community has shown great enthusiasm for this initiative, recognizing its potential impact.
Future Expansion Possibilities
With a current waiting list for childcare in Pictou County, this project could be just the beginning. Discussions are already underway regarding the opportunity to replicate this model across other communities, utilizing former school buildings for similar purposes. “There may be other areas in Pictou County that we could do this in,” states District 11 Councillor Andy Thompson, emphasizing the need for more solutions to the prevalent childcare shortages.
This initiative not only preserves the historical significance of the building but also addresses the pressing needs of modern families, making it a noteworthy development for the Plymouth Community. As the facility prepares for its opening, it symbolizes hope and support for families in the area, paving the way for a brighter future.
