Music Legends Unite: A Historic Gathering Celebrated in Southend

A heartwarming exhibition is currently showcasing a unique moment in music history at Southend's Beecroft Gallery. More than 50 renowned musicians from South Essex came together to create a memorable group photograph, now on display for the final weeks of the "Scene by the Sea" exhibition.

A Gathering of Legends

This iconic photo captures the essence of the local music scene, featuring notable artists from Southend, Canvey, and Basildon. Among the familiar faces are Paul Shuttleworth, Will Birch, and Vic Collins from The Kursaal Flyers, along with John B Sparks, the original bassist of Dr Feelgood, and the band's manager, Chris Fenwick. The photograph also includes musicians associated with influential bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure, and even collaborations with renowned artists such as Eric Clapton.

The Vision Behind the Photo

Southend musician Mark "Snowboy" Cotgrove organized this historic gathering, allowing these music legends to come together at the Palace Theatre in Westcliff for a once-in-a-lifetime shot. Carl Allen, from Big Wave PR, brilliantly captured this moment, remarking on the honor it was to photograph such respected artists. His effort in getting them all in one place was notable, especially as conversations flowed abundantly among the legends.

A Treasure for Art Enthusiasts

The signed photograph has been generously donated to the Beecroft Gallery, where it will remain until the exhibition's conclusion on October 26. Charles Sharman-Cox, curator and founder of the Thames Group of Artists, expressed his regret at not being able to attend the gathering but conveyed his joy at having the photograph included in the exhibition, highlighting the spectacular turnout it has drawn.
