Moldovan Citizens Set to Gain Enhanced Social Benefits in Slovakia

In a significant development for Moldovan citizens working in Slovakia, a new Social Security Agreement has been signed, ensuring that they can access important pensions and social benefits. This agreement, signed by Natalia Plugaru, the Minister of Labor and Social Protection from Moldova, and Marián Valentovič, State Secretary of the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Family of Slovakia, marks a pivotal step towards safeguarding the rights of workers across borders.

A Commitment to Social Rights

The newly established framework addresses the social rights of individuals who have legally worked in both Slovakia and Moldova. Through this agreement, beneficiaries can expect to receive various forms of financial support, including old-age pensions and disability pensions, among other social protections. The Minister noted this agreement as part of Moldova's broader strategy to enhance bilateral relations and ensure the welfare of its citizens abroad.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During the signing ceremony, which coincided with the official visit of Moldova's President Maia Sandu to Slovakia, Plugaru emphasized the Moldovan government’s commitment to securing and expanding social protections for its citizens. She stated, "Each signed agreement reflects our firm commitment to protecting the rights of citizens, wherever they are." This sentiment underscores Moldova's proactive approach to enhancing the safety net for its workforce in other countries.

Future Prospects

As of now, Moldova has 22 Social Security Agreements in place, with 18 actively implemented, showcasing a collaborative framework across various EU countries and beyond. Recent agreements with nations such as Italy, Greece, and Canada illustrate Moldova's dedication to fostering supportive international relations that prioritize the well-being of its expatriates.

This initiative not only paves the way for improved social security for Moldovan workers in Slovakia but also strengthens the bond between the two nations, establishing a model for cooperation that could inspire other bilateral agreements in the future. It is a promising development for Moldovan citizens, reaffirming their rights and entitlements, wherever their work may lead them.
