Tiernan first signed up for the stem cell register after hearing about it during a school assembly in 2022. With a close family connection to cancer, as his uncle battled kidney cancer, the decision to become a donor felt personal and urgent. “I took it as a sign to sign up,” he shared, emphasizing how closely this cause resonated with him.

The Donation Experience

A few years later, Tiernan received an unexpected call from DKMS, informing him he was a match for a patient in need. He admitted that he had momentarily forgotten he had registered, but was thrilled to learn of his match. The donation process turned out to be much simpler and quicker than he anticipated, taking only about two and a half hours. “Even the nurses were surprised – they were like, ‘Are you done already?’” he recalled with a sense of disbelief.

He recounted how his colleagues at work expressed their admiration for his contribution, saying how inspiring it was. “I told them it’s actually straightforward to sign up and register,” he pointed out, aiming to motivate others by illustrating just how accessible the process is.
