Meet the Inspiring Young Heroes Making a Difference in Their Communities

This year's BBC Radio Cornwall Make a Difference Awards is set to recognize four exceptional young people whose remarkable stories of kindness and resilience have inspired many. These finalists, under the age of 16, showcase outstanding commitment to improving their communities through various initiatives.

A Heart of Gold: Albany's Quest to Help Others

Eight-year-old Albany from St Austell has dedicated herself to humanitarian efforts from a young age. Inspired by her mother's work with the homeless, she initiated several charitable projects, including the Shoebox Appeal and crafting Christmas cards and bracelets to raise funds for cancer research. Personal loss has fueled her passion, as she aims to support those affected by cancer while also engaging in community clean-up efforts. Recently, her "bags of happiness" project brought joy to many, demonstrating how one small person can create a significant impact in others' lives.

Orkney: Running for a Cause

Orkney, a passionate advocate for wildlife conservation, has taken his purpose to the next level by undertaking various running challenges. After experiencing a medical incident in his early years, he began fundraising for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and has since raised nearly £7,000 for multiple charities. His determination is highlighted by his ambitious goal of completing seven runs in seven days this summer, covering a total of 77km. Orkney’s achievements illustrate the incredible impact young people can have through personal challenges and community engagement.

Harriet: Championing Autism Awareness

Fifteen-year-old Harriet's journey speaks volumes about the importance of advocacy and mental health awareness. Diagnosed with autism at eight, she turned her challenges into opportunities by organizing a coffee morning to support the National Autistic Society. With the companionship of her assistance dog Pip, Harriet found the motivation she needed to improve her mental health through running activities, demonstrating how personal experiences can lead to broader societal contributions.

Ellawyn: A True Friend in Action

At just 12 years old, Ellawyn's determination is exemplified in her ambitious charity challenge to aid her best friend Annie during her battle with illness. Her three-day Aquathalon—paddling, swimming, and running—was inspired by the need to support a friend. The poignant moment that highlighted her challenge was when Annie planned to attend the final day despite her struggles, showcasing the power of friendship and support in their community.

The BBC Radio Cornwall Make a Difference Awards, now in its fifth year, will honor these incredible young heroes at a ceremony in Truro this September, reminding us all of the potential for change led by the younger generation. Each of these finalists not only shines as individuals but collectively represents the spirit of community and humanity.
