Meet the Inspiring Volunteer Transforming Lives at QEH
In a heartfelt initiative that highlights the strength of community support, Gill Hurcomb, an 82-year-old volunteer at Lynn’s QEH, has devoted the last 18 years to helping cancer patients regain their confidence through the 'Look Good Feel Better' program. After her own battle with breast cancer, Gill has made it her mission to ensure that others feel empowered and beautiful during their treatment journey.
Empowering Patients Through Experience
The 'Look Good Feel Better' sessions, facilitated by trained beauticians, provide practical guidance on managing the visible effects of cancer treatment, such as hair loss and skin changes. Gill and her fellow volunteer Janet Eason, both breast cancer survivors, play a crucial role in these sessions, offering personalized support that stems from their own experiences. Their efforts ensure that patients leave feeling more like themselves, filled with renewed confidence and emotional well-being.
A Commitment to Giving Back
Gill’s connection to the QEH runs deep. After losing her mother to breast cancer in 2005 and subsequently facing her own diagnosis the following year, Gill felt a strong desire to give back to the healthcare facility that supported her during difficult times. This commitment has led her not only to assist in 'Look Good Feel Better' sessions but also to help manage the 'Grab a Cuppa' group, creating a welcoming space for patients to share their experiences and connect with others who understand what they are going through.
A Lasting Impact
Patients like Val, who was newly diagnosed, have found comfort in Gill's presence. Val expressed, “Gill came over and introduced herself straight away. She knew I was feeling anxious and really took the time to listen.” This personalized touch underscores the importance of compassionate care in health services, proving to be invaluable for those in vulnerable states.
The Inspirational Spirit of Volunteerism
Joanne Rowe, the QEH voluntary services manager, remarked on Gill's unwavering dedication, saying, “Gill embodies the spirit of many of our volunteers. Her commitment to continue volunteering, despite her own health challenges, is inspirational.” Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on the lives of many, showcasing the profound importance of community and support during challenging times.
