Meet the Inspirational Clare Hodgson: From Challenges to World Champion
Clare Hodgson's journey is nothing short of remarkable. After overcoming significant health challenges, she has emerged as a world champion in Inclusive Skating. Training at the Billingham Forum Ice Arena, Clare has made her mark in the skating community, illustrating how determination and support can lead to extraordinary achievements.
A Passion Rediscovered
Clare's passion for ice skating began during a birthday party at Bradford Ice Rink when she was just 15. Drawn by the beauty of the sport and the similarities it shared with ballet, which she had been practicing since childhood, Clare fell in love with skating instantly. Despite facing bullying and health challenges growing up, the ice became a sanctuary for her.
Support and Community
After a difficult phase that included a mental breakdown and health setbacks, Clare found a new home at Billingham Forum Ice Arena. Under the guidance of her new coach, Claire Johnson, she embraced her challenges, focusing on her skating, which she found to be therapeutic. “The skating community is incredibly friendly,” Clare recalls. “They made me feel part of it all, and I haven't looked back.”
Impressive Achievements
Clare's dedication to her craft has led her to achieve remarkable results. In the Virtual World Championships 2023, she won Gold and Silver in Senior Ladies Level 3, and she continued to excel in subsequent competitions, including in-person events. Her story of resilience is an inspiration, proving that with support and determination, one can transcend perceived limitations.
A Bright Future Ahead
Looking forward, Clare is not only aiming for more medals but also spreading awareness about her health conditions, including Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder. “I'm really proud of what I've achieved so far, and I hope my story will show that skating is for everyone – no matter what obstacles are in the way,” she expresses with conviction.
As Clare continues her training and aims for medals, her story remains a testament to the power of resilience and community support.
