Mars Tapes Expands: A Celebration of Cassettes and Community in Manchester!
In an exciting development for music enthusiasts, Mars Tapes, the last dedicated cassette shop in the UK, is preparing to move into a larger space within Manchester's renowned Afflecks Palace. This expansion marks the third phase in the shop's journey since its inception in 2019, and it signifies a growing appreciation for the once-retro medium of cassette tapes.
From Humble Beginnings to a Major Expansion
Founded by Alex Tadros, Mars Tapes started in one of the tiniest units of Afflecks Palace but has flourished, with cassettes seeing a resurgence in popularity. "After 7 years of growth, we are entering into our third expansion. This time moving down to a much larger unit on the 1st floor of Afflecks Palace," Alex stated, highlighting the enthusiasm surrounding this next chapter.
A Weekend Celebration to Remember
To celebrate this significant milestone, Mars Tapes is hosting a festive weekend on March 7 and 8, featuring live music performances, art exhibitions, and special offers on cassette merchandise. Among the exciting events is a DJ set by Dave Haslam and a live performance from the rising Scottish band Cowboy Hunters, who will be launching a new EP on cassette.
New Offerings in the Expanded Space
The new and larger unit will provide an expanded library of cassette tapes, revamped vintage audio equipment, and the introduction of the Mars Tapes Listening Cafe—a cozy space for customers to relax and enjoy their favorite tapes over a cup of coffee. Alex expressed, “We wanted to celebrate with all of the cassette aficionados that made it possible! We're offering food, drinks and in-store deals, alongside fantastic live music.”
An Artistic Touch: Horace Panter Joins the Celebration
The weekend will also feature Horace Panter, a member of the legendary band The Specials, who will display his cassette-inspired artwork. This collaboration highlights the intertwining of music, art, and community spirit that Mars Tapes embodies.
With an array of offerings and a focus on community engagement, Mars Tapes is poised to become a vibrant hub for cassette culture in Manchester. Free tickets for the opening celebration can be secured via Skiddle, making it accessible for everyone to join in on the excitement. As the love for cassettes continues to thrive, Mars Tapes stands as a testament to the enduring power of music and nostalgia.
