Major Step Forward: Jersey's Online Safety Consultation Finds Overwhelming Support

A public consultation in Jersey aimed at enhancing online safety has witnessed a remarkable response, with more than 80% of participants showing strong support for proposed legislation to combat illegal and harmful online content.

Voices of Islanders Heard

The eight-week consultation was deemed a success by Assistant Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy Moz Scott, who emphasized the importance of listening to the concerns of islanders. With 96 formal submissions received and additional input from over 100 young individuals through the School Council Network, it is evident that the community values their ability to voice their opinions.

Enhancing Online Privacy Protections

In addition to the overwhelming support for removing illegal content, there was a notable call for enhanced online privacy protections, which three-quarters of respondents favored. This alignment showcases a collective acknowledgment of the need for safer digital spaces for all residents.

Deputy Scott highlighted the distressing nature of online bullying and the publication of harmful content, reaffirming the government’s commitment to create a supportive environment that protects islanders of all ages. The proposals from the consultation seek to address such pressing concerns and pave the way for a more secure online experience.
