Madibaz Rugby Team Poised for Success in Upcoming Varsity Shield

The excitement is building as Mandela University's Madibaz rugby team gears up for the 2026 FNB Varsity Shield, with new captain Eddie Kruger leading the charge. After narrowly missing promotion to the Varsity Cup last season, the team is eager to showcase their improvements and teamwork this year.

A Leader with a Service Philosophy

At just 22 years old, Eddie Kruger brings a wealth of experience to the team, having progressed from the Young Guns in 2022 to a crucial player in the first XV. Reflecting on his development, Kruger notes, “My game has developed a lot over the years,” highlighting his increased understanding of team dynamics and strategies. He credits coach David Manuel and the support staff for his growth, both on and off the field.

A Commitment to Teamwork

Eddie's leadership philosophy emphasizes service over status, encouraging a culture of accountability among teammates. “It’s an honour and a privilege to lead this team. My philosophy is simple; a leader plays for those around him,” he stated. This mindset has fostered an “exciting environment” within the squad, blending youthful energy with experienced talent.

Preparing for the Challenge Ahead

As the Madibaz prepare for their first match against CPUT in Cape Town on February 13, the team is focused on execution, discipline, and alignment. Coach David Manuel underscores the increasingly competitive nature of the tournament, acknowledging the importance of a cohesive forward pack and technical awareness among players for achieving success this season.

The camaraderie and dedication shown by Eddie Kruger and his team bodes well for the upcoming challenges, promising an exhilarating season for the Madibaz and their supporters.
