Local Teacher Inspires Community Through Innovative History Project

In a remarkable achievement, Alasdair Bright, a dedicated teacher from St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School in Kenton, has been recognized as the North East winner in the inaugural Inspiring History Teacher Awards. This honor celebrates educators who make history engaging and meaningful for their students and communities.

Celebrating Local Heritage

Alasdair's innovative approach to teaching history includes the creation of heritage walking tours that have garnered significant attention, having been translated into over 20 languages. Recognized for his efforts to foster an inclusive curriculum, Alasdair's work has sparked immense community interest, reflecting the rich history of Newcastle that often goes unnoticed. The walks delve into local gems such as the historical Kenton Quarry and even the World War II underground bunker, showcasing the area's notable past.

Empowering Students through Heritage Heroes

For the past four years, Alasdair has been leading a pupil leadership group known as ‘Heritage Heroes.’ This initiative empowers students to research and explore Newcastle's history. The children are not only passionate about heritage but also actively involved in heritage-related roles within the school, linking them with local resources and archives. Alasdair believes that understanding one's roots is essential for personal growth, especially for students from diverse backgrounds, including refugee families.

A Community-Driven Initiative

Alasdair's project thrives on community engagement. He sought assistance from parents to check language translations, resulting in an overwhelming response that led to tours being available in a multitude of languages. This inclusivity highlights the demand and appreciation for heritage education within the local community. Alasdair expressed his pride in being part of a project that not only educates but also connects people across linguistic and cultural barriers.

Looking to the Future

The future looks bright for Alasdair and his students. Plans are underway to expand the project further, including the exciting possibility of establishing a museum within the school and initiating archaeological digs on-site. These ambitious goals reflect the school's commitment to delivering an enriched educational experience that honors both local and broader historical narratives.

As Alasdair prepares for the upcoming ceremony where the overall winner will be crowned, he emphasizes that this accolade is more than a personal achievement—it's a testament to the hard work of the entire school community. With a strong foundation and a vision for education that inspires, the journey ahead holds tremendous potential for both Alasdair and his students.
