Local Support Group Empowers Young Mothers: A Lifeline in Times of Need
In a heartwarming testament to community support, the Happy Mums Foundation has created an invaluable resource for young mothers in Carlisle. The Teen to 25 support group, meeting every Wednesday, offers a judgment-free zone where mothers can share their experiences and find solace in the company of others going through similar challenges.
Building Connections Amidst Challenges
Aimee Bowerbank, a first-time mother who joined the Teen to 25 group, expressed how instrumental the foundation has been in her journey. After facing severe health challenges during her pregnancy, Aimee discovered the support she needed through Happy Mums, which prioritizes mothers' mental well-being as much as that of their children.
Despite the difficulties she faced, including a premature birth and subsequent hospital stays, Aimee found strength and camaraderie in the group. “It’s just an hour where they can be themselves,” she explained, highlighting the importance of having a supportive environment.
Positive Impact on Mental Well-being
For many young mothers, feelings of isolation can be overwhelming. Aimee noted that the Teen to 25 group has become a safe haven for those who might feel judged in traditional support settings. She remarked, “No one knows what they’re doing. We’re all trying to figure it out.” This sentiment resonates deeply among the mothers, many of whom have formed lasting friendships that extend beyond the weekly meetings.
The foundation is currently facing funding challenges, aiming to raise £25,000 by the end of October to continue providing essential services. As of now, they have successfully raised £4,100. Aimee expressed her fears: “I would definitely struggle more without having that group,” emphasizing the critical role the foundation plays in supporting mental health among young mothers.
