Local Primary School Shines Bright with Outstanding Ofsted Report
Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School in Dalton-in-Furness is basking in the glow of recent accolades from its first inspection under Ofsted’s newly adopted framework. The school has received praise for its nurturing environment and strong academic performance, particularly in the areas of early years education, inclusion, and pupil behavior.
A Positive Learning Environment
In a comprehensive report following an inspection on April 14, 2026, the school achieved a 'strong standard' in four key areas, with three others meeting 'expected standards.' Inspectors noted that attendance rates were exceptionally high, even among disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), highlighting a culture where children feel motivated and excited to learn.
Strong Leadership and Inclusive Ethos
The inspection commended the leadership team for their diligent monitoring of attendance and collaboration with families to encourage regular school attendance. The positive behavior exhibited by students, characterized by mutual respect and dignity, significantly stood out in the report.
Moreover, the school’s commitment to inclusivity was praised, with staff effectively identifying and addressing pupils’ individual needs. The qualifications and training of the teaching staff were also noted as essential to fostering an environment conducive to learning for all children, regardless of any barriers they might face.
Exceptional Early Years Provision
The early years segment of the school received particular recognition. Children are reportedly thriving, settling in quickly, forming strong relationships with staff, and progressing securely from an early age. The emphasis on early reading, speech, and language skills equips them well as they prepare to transition into Year 1.
A Comprehensive Approach to Personal Development
The inspectors found that the school’s personal development and wellbeing initiatives are notably effective. From leadership opportunities to after-school clubs and community projects, these programs play a crucial role in enhancing pupils’ confidence and community engagement. The school fosters a sense of belonging, enabling students to feel valued as part of a ‘school family’.
Looking to the Future
Headteacher Bernadette Charnley expressed her pride in the report's findings, emphasizing the dedication of the entire school community. Despite identifying areas for further development, she reassured that the school is already addressing these points, aligned with their ongoing improvement plans. “This report captures what makes Our Lady of the Rosary such a special place – a nurturing school community where children feel safe, valued, and inspired to achieve their best,” Charnley stated.
The school, which is a member of the Mater Christi Multi-Academy Trust, is poised for continued success as it builds on these encouraging insights from Ofsted.
