Local Charity's First Exhibition Inspires Creativity and Community Support

A notable achievement in Cambridge has emerged as Sew Positive, a charity focused on enhancing mental health through creativity, hosted its very first exhibition and sale at its Gwydir Street hub. This event not only marked the official takeover of the space, formerly associated with Cambridge Design Rooms, but also showcased the profound impact of creativity on mental well-being.

Empowering Through Art

The exhibition featured a diverse collection of handcrafted items created by local sewers and craftspeople, many of whom participated in the charity's classes. CEO and founder Melissa Santiago-Val emphasized that the intent behind the exhibition was not to create a competitive environment, but rather to "remove barriers" for those looking to exhibit and market their creative works. She noted, "Making is something that can really support your wellbeing and your mental health and also create a potential income for you."

A Safe Haven for Creativity

Sew Positive provides a creative outlet in a safe space for individuals facing mental health challenges, social isolation, or trauma. The charity's array of classes, including the Saturday Sewing Café and various workshops, aim to instill confidence in participants to showcase and sell their creations. Santiago-Val remarked on the importance of having a permanent location where participants can express themselves freely and receive the support they need during challenging times.

Recognition and Community Pride

The efforts of Sew Positive have garnered recognition, as evidenced by their nomination for the King's Award for Voluntary Service, just before their inaugural exhibition. Santiago-Val expressed the pride felt by the entire community, saying, "It was a really special day for our charity and we're extremely proud to have represented all the efforts in our entire community."

As Sew Positive continues to thrive, the charity not only champions mental health through creativity but also strengthens community ties, proving that the power of art can leave a lasting impact on people's lives.
