In a recent effort to stimulate the local economy, Huntingdonshire District Council introduced the 'Shop, Drink and Dine' loyalty card aimed at boosting foot traffic in St Ives during April and May. While not every business experienced the anticipated success, several entrepreneurs have praised the initiative for its potential to enhance community engagement and support local commerce.

Support for Local Businesses

Victoria Giles, owner of Adorn, expressed her support for the loyalty card, declaring it a "really good idea". Priced at only £5, the card was designed to entice more shoppers to explore local stores. According to Giles, the initiative successfully attracted more customers to her shop, demonstrating the effectiveness of community-driven strategies to promote local shopping.

Encouragement from Local Managers

Cyril Bray, manager of The Tellers Table, echoed Giles' sentiments, noting that the card served as an additional encouragement for local patrons. He highlighted that the initiative fostered greater support for local businesses, resulting in a positive atmosphere among shop owners and customers alike. Bray remarked, "Anything to encourage people to use local businesses is always a plus."

Consumer Engagement and Future Prospects

Although some businesses reported lesser impact from the loyalty card, others like Amy Seymour-Shove at The Whisky Cafe found that it did reignite interest among shoppers. Seymour-Shove observed that the initiative prompted many to reconsider the local options available to them, which is a meaningful development for community engagement. Councillor Brett Mickelburgh confirmed that over 400 loyalty cards were used, indicating a notable minimum spending of £3,750 within participating shops.
