Join the Movement: Two Million Coming Together for Climate Action in June!
This June, an impressive two million individuals across the UK are set to participate in the Great Big Green Week, a significant event dedicated to climate action and the protection of nature. Scheduled to occur from June 6 to June 14, 2026, this initiative aims to celebrate existing efforts and galvanize community engagement in environmental responsibility.
A Collective Effort for Change
Major organizations such as Co-op, BT, and Openreach are actively supporting Great Big Green Week, recognizing the importance of community involvement in tackling climate challenges. Co-op plans to engage over seven million members and employees, encouraging participation in local events that highlight environmental initiatives. This year's objective is to double the engagement witnessed in 2025, where over 1.2 million people attended more than 5,800 events across various public spaces.
Building Stronger Communities
Paul Gerrard, Co-op's public affairs, policy, and campaigns director, emphasized the significance of community involvement, stating, "As a member-owned co-operative... we know people care deeply about protecting the places they love." He highlighted the event as a positive opportunity for community members to come together and take meaningful action for the environment.
Inclusivity and Visibility
The Great Big Green Week is designed to be inclusive, welcoming participants from all walks of life. This non-political initiative encourages everyone—including businesses of all sizes—to show their commitment to environmental sustainability. By organizing events and collaborating with local community groups, participants can showcase practical actions that support climate and nature.
As Helen Meech, executive director of The Climate Coalition remarked, "Real progress on climate and nature needs everyone." This sentiment reflects the unifying purpose of the initiative, aiming for collective action to instigate real change in local communities while building a better future for everyone.
