Join the Movement: The Great British Spring Clean Returns to Transform Our Communities!

The Great British Spring Clean is set to make a grand return from March 13 to 29, rallying hundreds of thousands of volunteers to take part in a nationwide effort to clean up litter. Spearheaded by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, this initiative is calling out to those who take pride in their local areas to join forces and contribute positively to their communities.

A Clean Start with Litter Heroes

Beginning as a one-off event in 2016, the Great British Spring Clean has evolved into a significant campaign that has seen an impressive 4.5 million bags of rubbish collected by passionate Litter Heroes across Britain. Last year alone, nearly 400,000 volunteers participated, contributing greatly to creating cleaner and more enjoyable public spaces. With statistics showing that 95% of participants noticed a tangible difference in their local areas, it’s evident that collective efforts yield substantial results.

Community and Corporate Collaboration

The campaign is not just about volunteers; it also sees collaboration from corporate partners committed to environmental sustainability. Companies like Nestlé, KFC UK&I, and Mars Wrigley are actively involved in promoting and participating in the Great British Spring Clean. Their contributions, whether through organizing events or funding initiatives such as the Chewing Gum Task Force, demonstrate how businesses can play a pivotal role in addressing litter issues. As Sarah Drakes of Nestlé states, "As a food and drink company, we're aiming for none of our packaging to end up as litter or in landfill."

Inspiring Leadership from Local Heroes

Emdad Rahman, a civil servant and one of Keep Britain Tidy's Litter Hero Ambassadors, embodies the spirit of this initiative. Through his Little Litter League scheme, he engages young people and families in environmental advocacy, emphasizing education's role in fostering long-term change. Emdad’s success story illustrates how one individual’s commitment to cleaning up their surroundings can inspire many others to take action.

As the campaign kicks off, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, extends her gratitude to volunteers and highlights their impact in removing harmful litter: “Thanks to passionate and dedicated volunteers like Emdad, more than four million bags of harmful litter have been removed from streets, parks and beaches.”
