Islanders Unite: A Successful Step Towards Safer Online Spaces in Jersey

A recent public consultation regarding proposed legislation aimed at enhancing online safety in Jersey has garnered overwhelming support from the community. This initiative marks a significant stride towards providing islanders with the necessary tools to combat illegal and harmful online content.

Strong Community Engagement

Over an eight-week period, the consultation received more than 96 formal submissions, indicating a strong desire among residents for action against harmful digital content. Notably, over 80% of participants expressed their backing for a statutory right to request the removal of illegal content, showcasing a united voice advocating for safer online spaces.

Focus on Youth and Online Privacy

Importantly, three-quarters of those who participated also supported the implementation of enhanced online privacy protections. The involvement of young people through the School Council Network further emphasizes the community's commitment to addressing this issue. Their input is crucial as they are among the most active online users and often face the brunt of online bullying and harmful content.

Deputy Moz Scott, the Assistant Minister for Sustainable Economic Development responsible for cyber security, highlighted the importance of this consultation. He stated, "It's important that islanders' voices are heard as we look to shape online-safety frameworks in Jersey."
